- 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust store-bought or homemade
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter melted and slightly cooled
- 2 large eggs
- ¼ cup whole milk
- ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- Optional: ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips for extra richness
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place your unbaked pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish and crimp the edges. Set aside.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, and salt until evenly combined.
In a separate bowl, beat the eggs lightly, then add in the melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth.
Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, whisking until a thick batter forms. If using, fold in the chocolate chips.
Pour the batter into the prepared pie crust, smoothing the top with a spatula.
Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is set and a toothpick inserted comes out with moist crumbs (not wet batter).
Allow the pie to cool completely on a rack before serving. It will firm up as it cools.
- Don’t Overbake – The center should still be slightly soft when you remove it from the oven.
- Use High-Quality Cocoa – For the richest flavor, use Dutch-processed or a premium cocoa powder.
- Cool Before Slicing – Let the pie cool for at least an hour to firm up for clean slices.
- Add a Pinch of Espresso – A tiny bit of espresso powder can intensify the chocolate flavor.
- Serve with Whipped Cream – A dollop of freshly whipped cream or vanilla ice cream takes it to the next level.
