- 4 Italian sausages mild or spicy
- 2 cups of marinara sauce
- 1 large onion sliced
- 2 bell peppers sliced (green and red for color)
- 4 slices of provolone cheese
- 4 hoagie rolls
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preheat Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Cook Sausages: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sausages and cook until browned on all sides, about 10 minutes. Ensure an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) is reached.
Sauté Vegetables: Remove the sausages and set aside. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and bell peppers with a pinch of salt and pepper. Sauté until they are tender and slightly caramelized, about 8 minutes.
Assemble Sandwiches: Slice the hoagie rolls and place a slice of provolone cheese in each. Add a sausage to each roll, topped with sautéed vegetables and a generous amount of marinara sauce.
Bake: Wrap each sandwich in aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the rolls are toasty.
Serve: Serve hot, with extra marinara sauce if desired.
- Cheese Choice: While provolone is traditional, experimenting with mozzarella or smoked gouda can add a different flavor profile.
- Sausage Selection: Choose high-quality Italian sausage for the best flavor; consider mixing spicy and mild sausages.
- Vegetable Variations: Add mushrooms or olives for an extra layer of flavor.
- Toasting Rolls: Lightly toasting the rolls before assembling adds crunch and prevents sogginess.
- Sauce Simmering: Let the marinara sauce simmer with a bay leaf or some garlic for enhanced flavor before adding it to the sandwiches.
