Hot Cross Buns are a timeless favorite. Soft, sweet, and full of spice. These buns are traditionally enjoyed around Easter.

Ingredients
  

For the Dough:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup mixed dried fruit raisins, currants, etc.

For the Cross Paste:

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp water

Instructions
 

  • Mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit five minutes.
  • In a bowl, combine flour, salt, and all spices.
  • Add yeast mixture, butter, and egg. Mix until combined.
  • Add dried fruits. Knead dough for eight minutes.
  • Cover dough and let rise for one hour.
  • Divide dough into twelve even-sized balls.
  • Place balls on parchment-lined baking tray.
  • Cover again. Let them rise for thirty minutes.
  • Mix flour and water for cross paste.
  • Pipe crosses on top of each bun.
  • Bake at 375°F (190°C) for twenty minutes.
  • Boil water and sugar to make glaze.
  • Brush warm buns with sugar glaze.

Notes

  1. Use fresh yeast for best rise.
  2. Soak dried fruits in warm juice first.
  3. Don’t skip the second rise.
  4. Use a piping bag for neater crosses.
  5. Let buns cool before glazing.
