Equipment

  • Electric mixer
  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula
  • 9-inch cake pan
  • Parchment paper
  • Wire cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter room temperature
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

For the topping:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (177°C) and line your cake pan with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • Cream Butter and Sugar: In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar until fluffy and light.
  • Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.
  • Combine Mixtures: Alternately add the dry ingredients and buttermilk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
  • Pour and Smooth: Transfer the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  • Bake: Place in the oven and bake for about 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Prepare Topping: Mix melted butter, sugar, and cinnamon. Brush over the warm cake.
  • Cool and Serve: Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Notes

  1. Always use room temperature ingredients for a smoother batter.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar thoroughly to incorporate air and ensure fluffiness.
  3. Do not overmix the batter once the flour is added to keep the cake tender.
  4. Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and achieve a clean release from the pan.
  5. Let the cake cool slightly before applying the topping to prevent it from soaking in too quickly.
